Well ladies and indeed gentlemen Theros pre-release day has been and gone. I hope you didn’t miss it because it was amazing, like a cold beer on a hot day.

I attended my local event at Forbidden Planet – Hanley. 35 others joined me there (I’d like to point out I’ve never been to this place before, but I was made to feel very welcome there.)
It was a friendly atmosphere with some good banter between players, so if you live in the Stoke on Trent area pop in, you won’t be disappointed.

Kick Off

To kick things off, our names were called out and we got to choose a colour of magic for the event. Sadly White was gone when it got to me, but my second choice colour of Green was still available, so that’s what I got. We then had 30 minutes to make a decent 40 card deck, so I got to work, pretending I knew how to build one. I went with White/Red build, mainly White with a good bunch of defence in there.

Battle

We then went to the battle. I got hammered in every game! Although I did manage to get a few wounds in, here and there.

I’d like to take this moment to give a shout out to all my opponents, I enjoyed every game I had and there was lots of banter. So Massive, massive thanks to Cameron Bentley, Andrew Marshall, Luke Carter and David Marshall.

Thoughts on Theros

We thought this was more intense than other previous versions, although there is a slightly slower build up to games. Just like Gatecrash you can make some deadly combos, I had 1 single attack against me do 14 damage, and it could have been for more.

This game or at least the ones I played, you really had to think of then end game. That lethal set of blows and how you were going to survive to build it up, then manage to execute it without your opponent stopping you. Scrying is back, allowing me to check cards to see if I like them or not, with the option to place them on the bottom of the your library. There’s some really good Heroic abilities available to use and the ordeals can make them all the more deadly, especially when used with monstrous cards, then sacrifice them for more bonuses.

That’s all for now, I plan on going to the games day to fight the hydra with my new card, I got at the pre-release.

Games day is on the 19th-20th of October, so ill will do a write up of that too.

Please comment with any experiences you had of the Theros: pre-release day.
